Misuya Chubei Needles
About Misuya Chubei
Founded in Kyoto in 1819, Misuya Chubei has crafted needles for over 200 years, blending Edo-period techniques with modern innovations.
A needle looks simple, but every part of it, from the strength of the shaft to the shape of the eye, affects how it feels to sew with. Misuya needles are made to glide through fabric so smoothly you barely notice them, the way a good tool should be.
A good needle needs to be both strong and supple. Too hard and it snaps; too soft and it bends out of shape. Balancing these opposites in a single fine strand of steel is the real challenge. Misuya solves it with a traditional heat-hardening technique, giving each needle resilience, strength, and a soft, understated silver sheen.
Most needles today are polished crosswise by machine. Misuya needles are polished lengthways, leaving fine lines, invisible to the eye, that run in the same direction as your stitch and guide the needle through fabric. Polishing is done by hand to within 0.01mm, a step so delicate that even experienced artisans hold their breath while they work.
Even the final step, packaging, is done by hand. As each needle is wrapped, it’s inspected for quality and finish, and any with the slightest flaw are removed. The needles are then sealed in aluminium foil to protect them from moisture, so they reach you in perfect condition.
