cohana
Handmade by Artisans Across Japan
Cohana makes beautiful, practical tools for sewing and handcraft. Each one is made in collaboration with traditional workshops across Japan. The brand comes from Kawaguchi, a Japanese maker of craft tools since 1953, and draws on decades of experience designing for makers.
Every Cohana piece pairs a skilled craftsperson’s technique with materials chosen from the region where that craft has thrived for generations.
Made across Japan
Cohana works with more than 60 local industries throughout Japan. Each product is matched with the region best known for its craft: cutlery towns for blades, woodworking regions for boxes, and centuries-old needle makers for pins.
The aim is to keep these traditional techniques alive and to support the communities that have passed them down.
Many Cohana tools bring together several workshops in a single piece. Their scissors are a good example. The blades are forged in Seki, Japan’s famous cutlery town, and the handles are finished by lacquer artisans.
Because each piece is made by hand, small variations are part of its character. No two are exactly alike.
Here’s a little story behind the "Cohana" name.
“Cohana” comes from Konohanasakuya-hime, a goddess in Japanese mythology. She is as beautiful as cherry trees in bloom and is revered as the goddess of Mt. Fuji.
The brand’s five signature colors come from traditional Japanese hues inspired by the changing seasons: daffodil yellow, rose, pale aqua, dayflower blue, and soft Fukagawa gray. Once you know the story, every tool feels a little more special.
From the Workshop to Your Sewing Table
Cohana tools are made to be used every day and kept for years. They’re sharp, well balanced, and built to last, yet lovely enough to leave out on your desk.
They also make thoughtful gifts for the sewists, quilters, and makers in your life, especially since many come beautifully boxed.
