Interview with the KOKKA sesse team

We had the opportunity to interview the amazing team behind KOKKA sesse to tell you more about the fabric shop itself. We’d be remiss not to mention that they are also responsible for sewing a lot of the clothing and bags you see on the Kokka Fabrics website! Read on to find out more about staff favorites, the history of the shop, and much more!

Can you introduce yourself?

Hey there! Welcome to KOKKA’s only directly managed store. We’ve got a fabulous selection of KOKKA fabrics that we’ve handpicked just for you. We’ve got loads of designer fabrics. You can even get a sneak peek at our pre-sales. Oh, and by the way, the clothes our staff are wearing? Yep, they’re made from KOKKA fabrics too!

Can you tell us about the history of Sesse?

Absolutely! KOKKA’s store opened in November 2012, right when the Hankyu Department Store Umeda Main Store had its grand reopening. It’s been about 12 amazing years with lots of wonderful customers visiting us.

What’s the most popular fabric among your customers?

Our original KOKKA fabrics are a hit, especially the cotton-linen canvas hand washer. And when it comes to designer fabrics, nani IRO is a crowd favorite, particularly with our overseas customers.

What’s your favorite fabric?

For plain fabrics, we adore the cotton-linen canvas hand washer, cotton moire, and lawn washer. For patterns, lately, we’re loving Keshiki. We pick fabrics imagining how fabulous they’ll look as finished clothes.

Do you hold any special events or workshops at the store?

Not at the moment, but stay tuned! We’re planning to host workshops for making clothes and bags soon. We also have occasional events for nani IRO and echino.

What fabrics are trending lately?

Right now, our Banshu Ori yarn-dyed collection, our washed lawn, and the nani IRO linen collection are popular among our customers.

Do the staff have any favorite fabrics or items to recommend?

Definitely! We’re big fans of KOKKA’s original gin-gam and stripes. They have a charming hand-drawn feel and come in colors that are perfect for adults.

What advice would you give to beginners who want to start sewing?

Go for a fabric that makes you go “Wow, I love this!” Trust your instincts. A good beginner project is a skirt that only requires straight stitching. We’ve got a fantastic selection of sewing books too, so we’re sure you’ll be able to find one that matches your style and sparks your imagination. The instructions are easy-to-follow and often have diagrams, so you won’t need to worry when it comes to creating your first makes.

Do you have a message for KOKKA fans overseas?

We’re thrilled that you’ve discovered KOKKA! Our store is packed with all kinds of fabulous fabrics. If you’re ever in Japan, please drop by and say hi. We can’t wait to meet you!
