This is a plump bag with lots of tucks. The round shape of the bag allows it to hold a lot of things. The featured fabric is a new pattern [tsubomi], a commemoration of echino’s 15th anniversary. The design was inspired by the cuteness of flowers before they bloom, and the glittering silver dots create a stylish look.

We interviewed Mioko about her creation:
Kokka Fabric (KF): What did you think of the fabric you used for this project?
The gorgeous pink pattern on the gray background has both a gentle feel and impactful look, making it joyful to see. The attractive silver dots scattered here and there are also cute and appealing to the eye. To make the dots sparkle with light, I incorporated a curved shape for a lively looking bag.
KF: Can you tell us any special elements or ideas that you incorporated into this creation?
The design is such that you can create a round shape without a pattern. By adding lots of tucks, the bag becomes fuller and rounder. The circular style of the bag allows it to hold a lot of things while keeping its shape.
KF: What are some tips for making this bag?
It is important to measure and sew the tucked areas of the outer and lining fabrics to make sure they are the correct size. If there is any discrepancy when sewing together with the bottom fabric or when matching the openings of the outer and lining fabrics, it might become a problem. Once you finish working on the tucks, please make sure that they are in alignmen
KF: How should we incorporate this bag into one’s styling?
To make the most of the color and pattern of the bag, I think it is best to style it with plain clothing. It looks great with a simple solid dress. In the coming season, it would also look fantastic with a sleek long coat.
KF: Thank you very much, Mioko! Here are sewing instructions along with step by step photos from her. Enjoy crafting!
Instructions
Preparation: Cut the fabric based on the pattern.
1. Mark the outer fabric on the back as shown.
2. Fold the fabric along the mountain fold, and sew along the stitch line.
3. Open where it was sewn by aligning the mountain fold line and stitch line. Apply 0.5cm wide stitch to secure.
4. Repeat the same process on the lining fabric.
5. With the front sides facing each other, sew together the bag panel outer fabrics at both sides. Press the seam open.
6. Adhere fusible interfacing on the bottom outer fabric. With the front sides facing each other, sew together with the bag panel fabric from Step 5.
7. Without adhering the fusible interfacing on the bottom of the lining fabric, repeat Step 6 for the lining fabric.
8. Fold the top opening of the outer and lining bags for 1cm to the reverse side respectively. Place the bags together with the front sides facing outside.
9. Fold the long ends of the handle for 1cm. With the front sides facing outside, fold in half and sew both ends. Make two pieces.
10. Place the handle in-between and sew the opening.
11. Finished!
